NHL Trades - Phaneuf, Giguere!... and Jokinen?

Trade 1
The Leafs have acquired star defenceman Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and defenceman Keith Aulie(6'6 dman who played for Team Canada) from the Calgary Flames. In exchange, the Flames get forwards Matt Stajan , Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White.

Trade 2
The Leafs have sent netminder Vesa Toskala and veteran forward Jason Blake to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for goalie J.S. Giguere.

Trade 3 - pending
The Flames and Rangers are working out a deal that would send centre Olli Jokinen and left winger Brandon Prust to New York in exchange for centre Chris Higgins and right-winger Ales Kotalik. Sources told Sportsnet the deal is pending approval from Kotalik who has a limited no-trade clause in his contract. Kotalik’s limited no-trade clause lists three teams he can not be traded to without his permission and Calgary is one of them. The deal is not expected to be completed until late Monday morning at the earliest. (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2010/01/31/flames_rangers_trade/)

Trade 1 - I think it's a risky move on the Flames parts to move a stud Dman in Phaneuf for a few unproven forwards in Stajan and Hagman. Granted they are young with some upside. I was thinking you could move Dion for a Corry Perry or Mike Richards/Jeff Carter. Maybe they couldn't get those guys. I think Toronto really improves getting Phaneuf who is a great Dman, leader, big shot at the point and the best hitter in the league. The guy who might be the diamond in the rough is this Keith Aulie who is 6'6 dman who played for Team Canada. Personally I think Toronto gets better in this deal. Granted Calgary move the $6.5 million off the roster and when you sign Bouwmeester and have Regehr as a rock on the blue line you can move Dion. Good job Brian Burke!

Trade 2 - I think Anaheim really gets a good forward (Blake) who can help in the scoring department. Granted Hiller is the starter there and they move their back up goalie in Giguere and get a Toskala in return. I think Anaheim and Toronto both improve in this deal. Giguere is not there to be the back up in Toronto but he will help develop Gustavsson. Who I think will be the next stud goalie in the NHL he just needs a few years under his belt. Toskala has been terrible in Toronto since he got there so the Leafs upgrade.

Trade 3 - When Jokinen went to Calgary many thought he was the answer they were looking for. He's been a bust. The problem is getting Kotalik isn't much help. I really like Higgins though to help the Flames on offense. I guess a shake up was needed especially when you are losing 9 games in a row.

* Not sure if you have noticed but the Canucks haven't made a big trade because they don't need to as their team is gelling and on fire lately. I think they might move to get some defensemen depth at the trade deadline but that's about it.

Not a banner trade day but have to say those who jumped in meant to change their teams for good!
