NY Islanders: Dumbest Franchise
Okay the NY Islanders are officially the dumbest franchise in NHL history if not sports history. They just signed Rick “Mr.Average” Dipietro to a FIFTEEN YEAR contract. It’s a guaranteed deal worth $4.5 mil a year. He’s 25 right now so that makes him 40 when the contract is finished. What other goalies have made it to 40 yrs old in the NHL? Hasek, Belfour, and Cujo. The only reason they have signed with other teams is they are proven great goalies.
Actually the NY Islanders had a great tradition with winning 4 Stanley Cups with Bossy, Trottier, Billy Smith, etc. But they are also known for there incredibly stupid trades and now signing. Not only did they over pay but they give too long of contracts. They signed A.Yashin to a 10 year 87.5 million dollar deal.
Here are some more facts why this franchise is the dumbest with terrible trades:
1999: New York Islanders traded Tommy Salo to the Edmonton Oilers for Mats Lindgren and 8th round selection (Radek Martinek) in 1999.
2000: New York Islanders traded Olli Jokien and Roberto Luongo to the Florida Panthers for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha.
2001: Ottawa Senators traded Alexei Yashin to the New York Islanders for Zdeno Chara, Bill Muckalt and 1st round selection (Jason Spezza) in 2001.
The dumbest deal 1998: The New York Islanders traded Todd Bertuzzi, Brian McCabe, and a 3rd rounder (Ruutu) to the Canucks for Trevor Linden.
I am surprised Mike Milbury had his GM job for SO long.

i agree they have made quite a few stupid trades and signings but how about the canucks...they have made there fair share of stupid moves as well...messier, trading peca in his prime, getting mogilney, actually wanting linden over modano, signing the over weight russian?...cam neely trading him away... and i know what you think that some were good but i look at the long run...now with the islanders i think they are looking at the goalie as an investment. you know that he will never make more and now that position is fix within the salary cap and if the cap goes up the team is looking pretty.
thats my thoughts
Hey anonymous, you wanna talk smack against the Canucks you gotta leave your name or it don't mean a thing! You also forgot to mention that if the cap goes down the team looks ugly ;o)
I agree with Trev that the Islanders have made some bone head moves. Dipietro and Yashin being at the top. This is what happens when ownership is too involved (Garth Snow? come on...he is just a figure head).
Too bad anonymous can't find the shift key.
NYI is not the dumbest franchise of all time because it has never had Mike Keenan working for it and that's a requirement.
Hey Anonymous...I agree with Drew. If you want to trash the Canucks then you got to leave your name at the bottom. Also you need to let us know who your favourite team is too. If your one of those guys who says "I don't have a favourite team" then don't comment on my blog anymore this is a blog for guys who have a back bone and is a true fan. Anyone can criticize but to be loyal to a team for years takes heart.
I agree Vancouver hasn't made the best deals but like you admitted some were good over the long run. Yeah we drafted Linden over Modano. But you could look at every team that didn't draft "so and so" and blame them. The draft is a crap shoot. Unless your name is Gretzky or Crosby or Ovechkin not Daigle.
Paul your shift key comment rocked.
I still stand by my Islander comments. Signing Dipietro is like Pitts signing M.Fleury to a 15 yr contract. It's stupidity in this new era of salary cap hockey. Even if the cap goes up Dipietro will not be the next Brodeur or Roy.
its me again and my shift key is broken...my name is anonymous and my favorite team just happens to be the canucks...
to "the drew" i doubt the cap will go down. so this deal goes one of two ways. if the cap goes and and dipietro plays ok then the islanders are the smartest franchise. if he sucks and the cap goes down, they are the dumbest. then again we are talking about an american team and an american player. $$$ talks
trev...linden made the canucks thru the 90's... he is mr canuck.
